Typographie vivante

Typographie vivante est un projet de recherche-création en cours à l’École de design de l’UQAM, plus précisément au laboratoire TAO. Ce premier prototype explore l’usage de l’argile et l’impression 3D pour concevoir des lettres éphémères, appelées à retourner à la terre. Ce geste fait écho aux premières formes d’écriture, gravées sur des tablettes d’argile, et propose un retour à des pratiques lentes, matérielles, ancrées dans le territoire. Un dialogue émerge entre technologie et nature.
Ce travail marque une étape importante dans le développement du prochain projet de recherche-création. La phase de prototypage a été menée par catherine d’amours, avec la collaboration de l’assistant·e de recherche Emile Parent, de terra (l’imprimante 3D) et de la Terre mère.
Typographie vivante is an ongoing research-creation project at the École de design of UQAM, more specifically within the TAO lab. This first prototype explores the use of clay and 3D printing to create ephemeral letterforms, meant to return to the earth. The gesture echoes the earliest forms of writing, inscribed on clay tablets, and invites a return to slow, material practices rooted in the land. A dialogue emerges between technology and nature.
This work marks an important step in the development of the next phase of the research-creation project. The prototyping phase was led by catherine d’amours, in collaboration with research assistant Emile Parent, terra (the 3D printer), and Mother Earth.

Natura Cultura
2024

Les 10 œuvres de la série Natura Cultura sont nées du sentiment d’appartenance au «chemin qui marche», c’est-à-dire, le fleuve Saint-Laurent, ainsi que ses écosystèmes. Suite à une invitation du Phare culturel de Verchères, la création de ce dialogue avec l’environnement naturel a pris vie.
The ten works in the Natura Cultura series emerged from a deep sense of belonging to the “walking path”, the Saint Lawrence River and its ecosystems. Following an invitation from Le Phare culturel de Verchères, this dialogue with the natural environment came to life.

Essai Les paysages intérieurs
2023-2025

Lancement et causerie autour de Les paysages intérieurs, premier essai publié chez Atelier 10, accompagné d’illustrations réalisées par l’autrice.
Les changements climatiques entrainent des bouleversements qui frappent l’imaginaire et font les manchettes. Mais certains impacts sont plus subtils, plus intimes: la perte de la neige en décembre, par exemple, ou celle de l’odeur d’une fleur qui embaumait jadis nos étés. Ce deuil des paysages disparus ou transformés a un nom: solastalgie.

Climate change triggers upheavals that capture headlines and fire up the imagination. But some impacts are quieter, more intimate: the absence of snow in December, for instance, or the fading scent of a flower that once defined our summers. This mourning of lost or altered landscapes has a name: solastalgia.

Les cycles solastalgiques
2023

Le projet de recherche-création Les cycles solastalgiques a été réalisé lors d'une résidence de création au laboratoire d'expérimentation d'Hexagram, à l'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). Une série de prototypes ont été réalisés et la recherche-création a ensuite été mise en page dans une publication.
La recherche explore la transposition du concept de solastalgie dans une pratique de création vidéographique, par l’usage d’archives retouchées à l’aide de l’apprentissage automatique. En manipulant des images de paysages et des fragments de mémoire, le projet cherche à brouiller les frontières entre nature et culture.
The research-creation project Les cycles solastalgiques was carried out during a creative residency at Hexagram's experimentation laboratory at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). A series of prototypes were developed, and the research-creation process was later laid out in a publication.
The research investigates how the concept of solastalgia can be translated into a videographic creative practice, using machine learning to alter and recompose archival materials. By working with landscapes and memory fragments, the project aims to blur the boundaries between nature and culture.

Peau holobionte
2023

Peau holobionte est une œuvre textile qui incarne de manière poétique la symbiose entre organismes, micro-organismes et corps vivants. Cette installation combine des matériaux tels que le coton et la soie, en mêlant des techniques traditionnelles de couture à des technologies contemporaines comme l’apprentissage automatique. Peau holobionte nous invite à repenser notre relation au Vivant. Une recherche-création de catherine d’amours, réalisée en cocréation avec atelier b.
Le paysage imprimé sur la robe provient d’images captées en hiver, sur les rives du fleuve Saint-Laurent. Ces images ont ensuite été retravaillées à l’aide d’un code génératif pour créer un motif qui évoque le vivant, la mémoire et les transformations du paysage.
Peau holobionte is a textile work that poetically embodies the symbiosis between organisms, micro-organisms, and living bodies. This installation brings together materials such as cotton and silk, blending traditional sewing techniques with contemporary technologies like machine learning. Peau holobionte invites us to reconsider our relationship with the Living. A research-creation project by catherine d’amours, co-created with atelier b.
The landscape printed on the dress originates from images captured in winter along the shores of the Saint Lawrence River. These images were then reworked using a generative code process to create a pattern that evokes the living world, memory, and the transformations of the natural environment.

Podium Memories
2021

Installation interactive conçue dans le cadre des Jeux olympiques de Tokyo, au Japon. Le podium, activé par l’interaction des passant·es, dévoile peu à peu ses mémoires. Ces souvenirs, issus des archives olympiques, font ressurgir les valeurs, les disciplines, les photographies, le design et d'autres traces du passé pour composer une narration plurielle. Projet réalisé chez Moment Factory.
Interactive installation designed for the Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan. The podium, activated by the interaction of passersby, gradually reveals its memories. Drawn from the Olympic archives, these recollections bring back values, disciplines, photographs, design elements, and other traces of the past to compose a plural narrative.
