La recherche-territoire est une méthodologie en design qui considère le territoire comme un partenaire de création. Dans le dôme de la SAT, cette posture rencontre un espace à sa mesure. L'image enveloppe le corps. On semble être au cœur du territoire, ce qui rend le partage de la recherche plus sensible, dans une forme de récit poétique.
Recherche-territoire is a design methodology that treats the territory as a partner in creation. In the SAT dome, this stance meets a space made for it. The image wraps around the body. We seem to stand at the heart of the territory, which makes sharing the research more sensory, taking the form of a poetic narrative.

Qu'est-ce que le design peut faire lorsqu'il émerge d'un lieu ? Cette question a structuré une semaine d'atelier menée conjointement par catherine d'amours et son invitée Henriëtte Waal, artiste et designer écosociale néerlandaise, dans le cadre de la semaine Design international de l'École de design de l'UQAM. Vingt étudiant·es, un territoire précis, aucun brief. La semaine s'est co-construite en réponse à ce que le quartier Hochelaga-Maisonneuve avait à leur raconter.
Le groupe a arpenté le terrain vague du boisé Vimont, carnets de dessin et enregistreurs de terrain en main, à la recherche du ruisseau Molson, enfoui sous la ville depuis la fin du XIX^e siècle. C'est la phragmite, plante rudérale des friches humides, qui a servi de boussole. Déployée en performance dans l'espace public aux endroits où le ruisseau coule encore sous le béton, elle a rendu visible ce qui a été invisibilisé.
What can design do when it emerges from a place? This question shaped a week-long workshop led jointly by Catherine D'Amours and her guest Henriëtte Waal, Dutch ecosocial artist and designer, as part of the Design International week at the École de design de l'UQAM. Twenty design students, one specific territory, no brief. The week built itself in response to what the neighbourhood of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve had to tell them.
The group explored the wasteland of the boisé Vimont, sketchbooks and field recorders in hand, in search of Molson Creek, buried beneath the city since the late nineteenth century. It was phragmites, a ruderal plant of abandoned urban wetlands, that served as their compass. Deployed as a public performance at the places where the creek still flows beneath the concrete, it made visible what had been rendered invisible.

La résidence de recherche-création Terre et correspondance explore une pratique de foraging où la terre est cueillie sur des terrains hostiles, dans ces «patches» de l’Anthropocène décrits par Anna Tsing.
À partir de cette matière prélevée dans des contextes marqués par la rupture, la rencontre se construit comme une méthode. La terre cueillie est à la fois une archive et une partenaire de travail. Les lieux orientent les choix en plus de dicter les petites comme les grandes contraintes. La co-présence ouvre un espace de transmission ponctué de rythmes, d’ajustements, de surprises et de nombreux apprentissages. De cet ensemble naissent des formes qui correspondent. Une installation sonore en devenir.
The research-creation residency Soil and correspondence explores a foraging practice in which soil is gathered from hostile sites, within the “patches” of the Anthropocene described by Anna Tsing.
From this material, taken from contexts shaped by rupture, encounter becomes a method. The gathered soil is both an archive and a working partner. Places guide decisions while setting constraints, both minor and decisive. Co-presence opens a space of situated transmission, marked by rhythms, adjustments, surprises, and ongoing learning. From this assemblage, forms emerge in correspondence. A sound installation in the making.

oracle de la totalité magique

Conçu dans le cadre du séminaire doctoral Avec l’autre qu’humain : coprésences et pratiques attentionnelles en art, l’oracle accompagne une performance écosomatique qui explore les manières d’entrer en relation avec le vivant. Le jeu se présente comme un espace poétique, pensé pour ouvrir l’attention, déplacer le regard et rendre possible une forme de dialogue sensible avec les formes de vie qui coexistent avec nous.
Chaque carte propose une forme abstraite, volontairement ouverte, afin de laisser à chacun·e la liberté d’y projeter des présences ou des récits. Composé de douze cartes réparties en trois arcanes majeures, l’oracle se déploie comme une constellation relationnelle dans un espace de correspondances afin de faire monde(s).

Developed within the doctoral seminar With the More-than-Human: Co-presences and Attentional Practices in Art, the oracle accompanies an ecosomatic performance that explores ways of entering into relation with the living world. The deck unfolds as a poetic space, conceived to open attention, shift perception, and make room for a form of sensitive dialogue with the forms of life hat coexist alongside us, in relation.
Each card offers an abstract, intentionally open form, allowing participants the freedom to project presences, narratives, or sensations. Composed of twelve cards organized into three major arcana, the oracle takes shape as a relational constellation—an open field of correspondences through which ways of making world(s) may emerge.

écologies graphiques est une publication collective réalisée dans le cadre du cours Design graphique : synthèse à l’École de design de l’UQAM. Initiée et éditée par catherine d’amours, la publication a été réalisée par les étudiant·es de troisième année au baccalauréat en design graphique et expériences visuelles. Le lancement a eu lieu le jeudi 11 décembre, lors de la dernière séance du cours, présentée sous la forme d’une exposition.
La publication rassemble des réflexions sur des pratiques du design graphique qui s’intéressent aux espaces interstitiels de la discipline. Elle explore des démarches où le care et l’autre-qu’humain occupent une place centrale, et où les choix formels et éditoriaux sont guidés par une attention éthique. Ces projets témoignent d’un design qui, dans ses marges, interroge l’indifférence, l’extractivisme, les gestes vides et les cadres hégémoniques, en proposant des formes de résistance ancrées dans l’attention et la qualité des présences.
La publication a été imprimée en risographie à l’atelier multitechnique, avec le soutien précieux de Rachel Gravouil. La maquette a été réalisée par les étudiant·es Émile Painchaud, Yasmine Taibi, Yacine Caiserman et Emmanuelle Rivest, sous la supervision de la professeure. Remerciements à Maxim Larrivée de l’Insectarium de Montréal pour sa collaboration.
graphic ecologies is a collective publication produced as part of the course Design graphique: Synthèse at the École de design de l’UQAM. Initiated and edited by catherine d’amours, the publication was created by third-year undergraduate students in graphic design and visual experiences. The launch took place on Thursday, December 11, during the final class session, presented in the form of an exhibition.
The publication brings together reflections on graphic design practices that engage with the interstitial spaces of the discipline. It explores approaches in which care and the more-than-human occupy a central place, and where formal and editorial choices are guided by ethical attention. The projects bear witness to a form of design that, from its margins, questions indifference, extractivism, empty gestures, and hegemonic frameworks, proposing modes of resistance grounded in attentiveness and the quality of presence.
The publication was printed in risography at the multitechnique space, with the invaluable support of Rachel Gravouil. The layout was designed by students Émile Painchaud, Yasmine Taibi, Yacine Caiserman, and Emmanuelle Rivest, under the supervision of the professor. Thanks are extended to Maxim Larrivée of the Montréal Insectarium for his collaboration.

Typographie vivante est un projet de recherche-création en cours à l’École de design de l’UQAM, plus précisément au laboratoire TAO. Ce premier prototype explore l’usage de l’argile et l’impression 3D pour concevoir des lettres éphémères, appelées à retourner à la terre. Ce geste fait écho aux premières formes d’écriture, gravées sur des tablettes d’argile, et propose un retour à des pratiques lentes, matérielles, ancrées dans le territoire. Un dialogue émerge entre technologie et nature.
Ce travail marque une étape importante dans le développement du prochain projet de recherche-création. La phase de prototypage a été menée par catherine d’amours, avec la collaboration de l’assistant·e de recherche Emile Parent, de terra (l’imprimante 3D) et de la Terre mère.
Typographie vivante is an ongoing research-creation project at the École de design of UQAM, more specifically within the TAO lab. This first prototype explores the use of clay and 3D printing to create ephemeral letterforms, meant to return to the earth. The gesture echoes the earliest forms of writing, inscribed on clay tablets, and invites a return to slow, material practices rooted in the land. A dialogue emerges between technology and nature.
This work marks an important step in the development of the next phase of the research-creation project. The prototyping phase was led by catherine d’amours, in collaboration with research assistant Emile Parent, terra (the 3D printer), and Mother Earth.

Natura Cultura

Les 10 œuvres de la série Natura Cultura sont nées du sentiment d’appartenance au «chemin qui marche», c’est-à-dire, le fleuve Saint-Laurent, ainsi que ses écosystèmes. Suite à une invitation du Phare culturel de Verchères, la création de ce dialogue avec l’environnement naturel a pris vie.
The ten works in the Natura Cultura series emerged from a deep sense of belonging to the “walking path”, the Saint Lawrence River and its ecosystems. Following an invitation from Le Phare culturel de Verchères, this dialogue with the natural environment came to life.

Essai Les paysages intérieurs

Lancement et causerie autour de Les paysages intérieurs, premier essai publié chez Atelier 10, accompagné d’illustrations réalisées par l’autrice.
Les changements climatiques entrainent des bouleversements qui frappent l’imaginaire et font les manchettes. Mais certains impacts sont plus subtils, plus intimes: la perte de la neige en décembre, par exemple, ou celle de l’odeur d’une fleur qui embaumait jadis nos étés. Ce deuil des paysages disparus ou transformés a un nom: solastalgie.
Launch event and conversation surrounding Les paysages intérieurs, a debut essay published by Atelier 10, featuring illustrations created by the author.
Climate change triggers upheavals that capture headlines and fire up the imagination. But some impacts are quieter, more intimate: the absence of snow in December, for instance, or the fading scent of a flower that once defined our summers. This mourning of lost or altered landscapes has a name: solastalgia.

Les cycles solastalgiques

Le projet de recherche-création Les cycles solastalgiques a été réalisé lors d'une résidence de création au laboratoire d'expérimentation d'Hexagram, à l'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). Une série de prototypes ont été réalisés et la recherche-création a ensuite été mise en page dans une publication.
La recherche explore la transposition du concept de solastalgie dans une pratique de création vidéographique, par l’usage d’archives retouchées à l’aide de l’apprentissage automatique. En manipulant des images de paysages et des fragments de mémoire, le projet cherche à brouiller les frontières entre nature et culture.
The research-creation project Les cycles solastalgiques was carried out during a creative residency at Hexagram's experimentation laboratory at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). A series of prototypes were developed, and the research-creation process was later laid out in a publication.
The research investigates how the concept of solastalgia can be translated into a videographic creative practice, using machine learning to alter and recompose archival materials. By working with landscapes and memory fragments, the project aims to blur the boundaries between nature and culture.
